The Healthful Choice is Now the Easy Choice


Eating out with kids can be a fun way to spend time together complete with tasty food and more than a few giggles and silly faces.  As anyone who's gone out to a restaurant with kids knows, it can also require some quick thinking and patience to ensure that everyone in the family is happy.  Here are some tips to help order up the foods kids will enjoy with the nutrition adults can feel good about.

  • Set expectations before heading to the restaurant.  Talk about the sweet and juicy fruit, crispy crunchy vegetables and yummy chicken, fish, etc. that you will all be enjoying.  They will already be thinking about the good for you choices before they look at the menu.

  • Offer select choices.  Would you like chicken or shrimp?  Would you rather have salad, broccoli or peas on the side?  This gives kids the power of choice without the not so good for them choices.

  • Show them, don't just tell them how delicious the healthy menu choices can be.  Kids will follow your lead.  It may not happen right away but rest assured they are taking it all in whether you're eating fried or grilled chicken, french fries or broccoli.

  • Make flavorful, balanced and nutritious meals routine whether at home or eating out at restaurants. Use MyPlate as a guide to include fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low fat dairy.  Kids like routine, whether it's scheduled activities, bedtime or what they'll see on their plate.
