If you crave sweets, you are not alone! Many — especially women — share this “affliction.” Some ways to keep your sweet tooth under control:

  • Get enough sleep. Being tired makes you more vulnerable to sweet cravings.
  • Don’t skip breakfast. Your first meal of the day should be moderately high in protein (e.g., egg whites, low-fat cheese).
  • Don’t allow yourself to get overly hungry throughout the day, which can cause you to splurge or cave into cravings.
  • Keep your blood sugar on an even keel with periodic snacks between meals. Good choices include low-fat yogurt, a handful of nuts, whole wheat bread, crackers, rice cakes with peanut butter, or low-fat cottage cheese.
  • Fresh fruits have lots of good nutrition and can also satisfy your cravings for sweets.
  • Cereal with raisins and and a few nuts topped with low-fat milk or soy milk can also be a great way to add nutrition and quell the sugar monster.
  • Do you bake? Try making your own cookies, cakes, muffins, etc., using half the amount of sugar called for in the recipe.
  • At restaurants, share a dessert with one or two other people.
