Pink Lima Beans, Chocolate Persimmons, and Dijon Greens!

That’s right; those foods are just a few ways to add a little more flavor and variety to your diet. You can look for them at your local farmers market, or if you’re in San Diego like us, you can find them at Specialty Produce—a must-stop on your list of places to see. Several of us on the Healthy Dining team were recently invited to take a tour, and honestly, we can’t wait to go back!

Specialty Produce was designed to be a restaurant food supply warehouse where the average person could also stop in and pick spices, an exotic new fruit or vegetable, or even a locally-made cheese to take home. From Okinawan Sweet Potatoes with a surprise flash of purple flesh inside, to fuchsia-colored dragon fruit, to micro greens that taste like Dijon mustard (yes, really!), we worked our way through the warehouse with Dana, fruit and veggie fanatic and Specialty Produce rep, and sampled fresh and local fruits and vegetables in so many flavors and varieties it could make your head spin.

It doesn’t just end with the warehouse of delicious food, though. Specialty Produce also:

  • Offers a weekly Farmers’ Market Box packed with local produce and other artisan goodies for purchase
  • Distributes collection containers to restaurants for fruit and veggie waste and leftovers to provide to local farmers
  • Offers tours and in-school presentations to introduce kids to the variety of fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables out there
  • Works with several non-profit organizations within the community, including:
    • Monarch School
    • San Diego Humane Society and SPCA
    • Susan G. Komen for The Cure
    • Project Wildlife
    • Collaboration Kitchen
    • Feeding America
    • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
    • Just Call Us Volunteers
    • Olivewood Gardens

The pictures can’t possibly do justice to the colors and flavors you’ll find at Specialty Produce, so check out the photos below and then head over to their warehouse ASAP to pick up some goodies of your own.

A BIG thank you to everyone at Specialty Produce for inviting us out to tour your warehouse! We’re hooked on all the great food you have to offer and all the outstanding work that you do!
