Summer is heating up, and whether you’re looking for an easy way to feed the family without heating up the kitchen, you’re on the road for vacation or off to the raceway to watch your favorite MotoAmerica riders, restaurants can be a smart choice.  When eating at restaurants on your own or with the whole family, it’s important to order the best choices to fuel your day and your goals.  Here’s how:

  • Know your go-to restaurants: If you’re loyal to certain restaurants, get to know their menus.  Look at the nutrition information and ingredient lists to identify several choices that are high in nutrition and quality ingredients while low in saturated fat and excess calories.
  • Search for dietitian-recommended menu choices near you: Healthy Dining’s dietitians comb through menus to identify the best choices that meet Healthy Dining and Kids LiveWell nutrition criteria.  These featured items can save you the time of sifting through lengthy nutrition charts on your own.
  • Focus on ingredients: When nutrition information or dietitian-recommended menu choices are not available, turn the focus to foods with the MyPlate model in mind.  Order choices that include roughly half fruits and veggies, along with lean proteins, whole grains and low fat dairy.
  • Make choice a key component: When everyone in the family has different tastes, restaurants can save the day!  Many restaurants offer long lists of healthier entrées and sides that make it easy to build good-for-you meals.

Focusing on great foods at home and eating out is about more than just a number on the scale or being “healthy.”  A nutritious diet and active lifestyle can help you do all the things you love!  For MotoAmerica riders, that’s reaching peak performance for a successful racing season.  If you’re off to the Utah MotoAmerica Superbike Championship in Tooele, UT, this week to watch your favorite riders, don’t forget to fuel up on dietitian picks at these nearby restaurants:
