In the upcoming webinar from American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), you will learn (a) how diet can affect not only your health but that of generations to come and (b) how foods like green, leafy vegetables can improve health.  You’ll also find out how parental eating habits influence children's eating habits for life, how to motivate yourself to eat better, and the steps you can take to raise a healthy family while lowering cancer risks.  Register now to take part in this free webinar on Thursday, February 26, 2015.

Don’t wait for the webinar to make healthy changes.  These tips from presenter Melissa Halas-Liang, MA, RDN, CDE, of SuperKids Nutrition are a great place to get started:

  • Challenge yourself to include at least two colors of fruit or vegetables at each meal. Track your colors for a week using the Super Crew Color Tracker in English and in Spanish.
  • Puree your favorite veggies and freeze them in serving size portions.  During a busy week, mix them into your favorite sides, dips or dishes for added flavor, fiber, health benefits and vitamins.
  • Jazz up your water!  Use fun combinations of fruits, vegetables and herbs to create your own flavored water.  Try fresh mint sprigs + sliced cucumber, strawberries + orange slices, raspberries + lime slices, and fresh mint sprigs + pineapple.  Keep the pitcher handy in your fridge, and drink your jazzy water instead of soda, juice or sweet tea to save calories.
  • Make healthy eating a family affair! Try a new fruit or vegetable as a family once a week.  Take the kids shopping and let them pick out something new to try – like broccolini – a sweeter version of broccoli.  Then go home and cook a new recipe together.  Rate it, discuss it, and talk about it.
  • Grow your own groceries. This is the best way to eat seasonal and local, save money, empower your children with an invaluable life skill and convert picky eaters into vegetable lovers! Read about starting your own family garden, community gardens or utilize Super Crew learning activities to get your kids interested in gardening.
  • Snack fun and healthy! Try these ideas with young kids:
    • Frobana Crunch - Bananas cut into 4 pieces, dipped in plain yogurt, rolled in crushed graham crackers or a whole grain cereal, and frozen.
    • Dinosaur Trees – Fresh or steamed broccoli florets served with lemon juice, dipped into a healthy home-made salad dressing, or sprinkled with Parmesan cheese.
    • Nut Butter Sushi – Spread your favorite nut butter onto a whole wheat tortilla/wrap, roll it up around a peeled banana, slice and serve like sushi.
  • Add herbs and spices to your dinner to enhance flavor without the use of salt. Let kids experiment. Dried parsley, basil and garlic powder mixed with olive oil and parmesan with popcorn make great croutons for salads!
  • Experiment with a different whole grain this week, like amaranth, red quinoa, barley, buckwheat or millet.
