Q: Does dietary fat fit as part of a healthy diet and exercise plan?

A: Don’t neglect dietary fat as part of your active and healthy lifestyle. Despite the fact that it’s been demonized over recent decades as part of a non-fat and low-fat trend, dietary fat is a crucial part of a healthy diet, particularly if you’re active.

A few things to know about dietary fat:
  • The anti-inflammatory benefits of dietary fats are tremendous.  This means inflammation is reduced by the protective qualities of fats, primarily the plant-based fats, and this means lower risk of injury.
  • Plant-based fats such as olive oil and nuts are a good choice for unsaturated fats, which have been shown to have additional health benefits vs. saturated fats.
  • Adequate amounts of dietary fat in your meals can prevent, delay onset or aid in healing when it comes to injury.
  • Aim for your dietary fat intake to be at least 30% of total calories consumed.

Ensure you’re getting the proper nutrition, including adequate dietary fats, for your active and healthy lifestyle by working with a dietitian in your area.  When dining out, opt for Healthy Dining menu choices like these, carefully reviewed and selected by dietitians based on healthy ingredients and overall nutrition:
