Are There Ever Any “Healthy” Desserts?

The quick answer is that all foods can fit into a healthy diet that regularly includes lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables.  With that said, when you’re specifically looking for a healthier dessert, try choosing lower calorie options like non-fat yogurt, sherbet or sorbet. Most restaurants also offer fruit as a side item, which can be a good, lower calorie choice that is also a wealth of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

If you want to eat something more decadent like chocolate cake, just take a few bites, savor the flavor, and then set it aside. A few bites won’t make the difference in your caloric intake for the day.  If this is too much of a temptation, offer to split a dessert with others at your table or bring half of your dessert home.  Many restaurants now offer small desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth without putting a dent in your diet.
