12/16/2015 - Americans are dining out more than ever before. In the 1970s, about 36 percent of the average food budget was spent on food eaten away from home. Today the average consumer spends 48 percent of the food budget on eating out. According to the National Restaurant Association, the average adult buys a meal or snack from a restaurant 5.8 times per week.
