4 Quick Tips for Dining Out with Diabetes

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you are not alone!  There are 25.8 million people (children and adults) in the U.S. with diabetes and another 79 million people with pre-diabetes. People with diabetes may be trying to lose weight, watch their sodium intake, and/or watch their fat intake. (Check with your doctor to discuss which of these you should be doing.) And all the while, you are likely keeping an eye on carbohydrate intake—since it’s carbohydrates that cause changes in blood glucose levels.

Use these 4 quick tips to enjoy dining out while you manage your diabetes:

1.  Eat your usual portion size –To keep from eating too many calories, carbohydrates, fat, or salt stick to recommended portions like those on HealthyDiningFinder.com.  If necessary, take part of your meal home.

2.  Include lean protein – Choose meats such as skinless chicken or turkey for some satisfying protein without the extra fat.

3.  Limit excess fat – Opt for roasted, grilled and steamed items instead of fried foods; ask for sauces, gravies, and dressings on the side and use them sparingly.

4.  Be smart about carbohydrates – Choose your carbohydrates wisely to make sure your blood glucose levels remain normal. Choose whole grain starches (rolls, etc.) when available and keep their portion sizes to a minimum. Load up on fiber-rich fruits and vegetables.
